HBA Charitable Foundation Scholarship Program

2012 Scholarship Application Submission Period is Closed.

Eligibility
Scholarship applicants must:
  • be a graduating high school senior accepted by or currently enrolled in an accredited two-year junior college or technical college or a four-year university in South Carolina AND
  • have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a four-point scale.
The “Ernie Magaro Scholarship” may be awarded to an individual nominated by a member of The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia with priority given to financial need, academic excellence and the pursuit of a four- year degree from a public school in South Carolina with a concentration in residential construction and/or land development. The Board of Trustees of the Charitable Foundation will determine the amount awarded, generally not to exceed $5,000 per student per year.
 
The “John B. Nieri Scholarship” may be awarded to an individual nominated by a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia with priority given to financial need and to an individual pursuing a construction related degree from Midlands Technical College or a similar institution. The Board of Trustees of the Charitable Foundation will determine the amount awarded, generally not to exceed $3,000 per student per year.
 
The “Sales & Marketing Council Scholarship” may be awarded to an individual nominated by a member in good standing of the Sales & Marketing Council of Greater Columbia, with priority given to financial need, academic excellence and to an individual pursuing a degree in one of the following: marketing, advertising or real estate. The Board of Trustees of the Charitable Foundation will determine the amount awarded, generally not to exceed $1,500 per student per year.
 
The “Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia Charitable Foundation Scholarship” maybe awarded to members in good standing of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia, their children, or HBAGC employees, to assist those children in their pursuit of a post secondary degree. Scholarship applicants must:
  • be a graduating high school senior accepted by or currently enrolled in an accredited two-year junior college or technical college or four year college or university in South Carolina AND
  • have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a four-point scale AND
  • the parent of the applicant must be an active member of the HBA of Greater Columbia and have been a member for a period of at least 5 years.
Scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria: academic excellence, applicant interview, financial need, and HBA member’s service. The Selection Committee weighs each of these areas as follows: academic excellence (25%), interview (25%), and financial need (30%), and HBA member’s service (20%). Trustees have the right to waive the grade point average based on majority consent and pending approval of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees of the Charitable Foundation will determine the amount awarded, generally not to exceed $1,000 per student per year. 
 
Selection
The Scholarship Selection Committee consists of 10 Trustees. This committee meets in the spring of each year to review scholarship applications. Trustees have the right to waive the grade point average based on majority consent and pending approval of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Awards will be made by the Trustees pursuant to adopted procedures and by final approval of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
 
Awards/Funding
Scholarship funding is obtained by HBA member contributions, proceeds from the HBA Golf Classic and the Tour of Homes Scholarship House.
 
Student scholarship applicants must be available for interview if requested by the Trustees. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university for the benefit of the student. Renewal of scholarships may be awarded to previous Foundation Scholarship recipients who remain enrolled in a post secondary institution.
 
Applications for the HBA Charitable Foundation Scholarship can be
picked up at the HBA Office at 625 Taylor Street in Downtown Columbia.
